An Interview with Moat Academy’s Alumnus, Charles Ekpo, Now a Software Developer

"The second interview was PHP, with at least 2 years requirement which I never had, but knowing what I am capable of, I was given an opportunity to defend my CV and I came out successful after answering questions through my code!"- Charles

Can we meet you?
My name is Charles Ekpo from Akwa-Ibom stateā€¦ I am a Full-Stack Software Developer specializing in PHP

What were you doing before coming to Moat Academy?
Before coming to Moat Academy, I was a field service lead in a private telecom firm

What exactly do you want to achieve with the software development skills?
In a nutshell, I want to solve several problems and make things easier for people with the help of software development skills.

Why did you choose Moat Academy for Developers?
Many might train one to finish and be good or better, but I chose Moat Academy because they grow greatness; once I was done, I hit the ground and ran as if I had been in the software industry for 2 years.

How have things changed for you since gaining software development skills?
Life has been interesting because things are only getting better and better. Finally, I have the arsenals required to be great.

What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy and what do you feel about it now?
Before coming to Moat Academy, my fears were:
i. Resigning from my previous job.
ii. Just because I have never written a single code before, if I would really be able to understand coding fast enough to get me into the industry as soon as I am done with the training...
Now I feel it only starts with you believing in yourself.

How will you describe your experience in Moat Academy?
My experience in Moat Academy has been awesome in general...I got to know more about myself and saw what I could achieve ahead

What have you been able to achieve with the training?
With the help of the training, I have been able to hit the ground running as a full-stack software developer where I am currently handling a live project for a well known UK base company

Can you share your experiences with us since you graduated from Moat Academy?
I only have this write-up on my wall, "If you are not practicing, just know that someone somewhere is practicing, so when you meet with that person, be rest assured that he will win you". So, I kept practicing to stand out when opportunity comes. I have only attended 2 interviews, the first one required .Net experience, however I attended just to experience what the interview was like. The second interview was PHP, with at least 2 years requirement which I never had, but knowing what I am capable of, I was given an opportunity to defend my CV and I came out successful after answering questions through my code!

What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy?
My advice for those coming into Moat Academy might be funny but take it..DON'T MISS A CLASS let alone getting distracted a bit. Believe in yourself, if one line of code isn't clear to you, no matter how simple it appears to others, at that instance see yourself as the only one in that class... ask the instructor(NOT YOUR FRIEND) and understand. Lastly, you might struggle to catch up even at 100% concentration, just keep practicing at any free moment that you can.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In Five years from now, I want to be a successful owner of my own business while continuing to develop my skills and expertise in software development.
